Levels of Care Offered at an Independent Living Facility

For seniors who are active and want to maintain an independent lifestyle, independent living facilities are a good option. While some of these facilities may not provide medical support services, many independent living communities provide an array of social activities and other support services.

Type of Care to Expect

It is important to note that not all retirement communities are created equal. Some communities offer a whole host of activities and services, while others offer little more than housing. The following is a list of services that may be offered at an independent living community:

Social Services: As a person ages, it may become difficult for them to get out of their home and engage socially. To counter act this, many independent living facilities host community sponsored events and activities, each one designed to engage the body, mind and spirit. Through these social interactions, residents are able to pursue more active and fulfilling lives.

Dining Services: Some independent living communities will offer meal plans and other dining services. Here at Brookdale, we offer healthy dining plans and customized menus. Our dining approach is designed to both satisfy the resident’s palette as well as accommodate their dietary restrictions.

Wellness Programs: Many retirement communities offer health and wellness programs. These programs are designed to help residents lead more active and healthy lives. Programs can include services like weight control and nutrition advice. Some facilities even have on-site instructors who lead exercise classes and physical therapy programs.

Transportation: Transportation is another major service that most independent living communities offer. Transportation services will normally include bus or taxi services to doctor visits and nearby community shopping centers.

Support Services: In the event that a supportive need does arise, many independent living facilities offer some type of support designed to assist residents in getting the help they need.
